Coach PaulOn this day in 1776, a group of brave souls formally declared its independence from the then superpower of the world, Great Britain. Even though we moderns have this arrogant tendency of deconstructing the contributions of everyone who lived before us, I would ask us to suspend that impulse today. Instead I would ask us to consider the courage it took for those men and women to stand up and speak truth to power, while throwing off their shackles of oppression. It was a bold move in a time when such actions often resulted in brutal imprisonments, economic ruin or even death. And yet, knowing the risks, they still put their names at the bottom of a document that began the American experiment.

So today, in the midst of our barbecues and fireworks, let's take a moment to pay tribute to our country's founders, who, even though they were imperfect, nevertheless set in motion a series of events that led to the creation of our nation. And let us salute their wisdom and drafting a Declaration that generations of oppressed people, both within and without the borders of this country, have used as an inspiration and blueprint for obtaining their own freedom. And let us commit to always be on the side of those who are seeking to be free, wherever we may find them, that the spirit of America may shine forth like a bright beacon, giving hope to the downtrodden, help to those struggling to find their way and forever piercing the darkness of tyranny.

Happy Independence Day, and may God continue to bless America.

Warmest Regards,

Coach Paul
